205/40/17 is the recommended tire size to fit properly in a first gen.

I have a 97 neon with 225 40 18 on a 7.5 wide rim. You would need 5mm spacers on front and back, you might need a lil trimming of the strut or bending it up which ever you prefer. as for tire size you could go to www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html and it will let you compare tire size from what you have now to what you want. You see the difference in height width and speed.

with a 7.5" rim with a +35 offset, no need for spacers, but the 225's would be the reason for requiring the spacers.
